My latest EPD Infographic shows EPD numbers continue to rise

The infographic can be accessed at https://bit.ly/2026-EPD. I found the number of EPD for construction products using EN 15804, and registered within an EPD Programme, has risen to 57,995 at the start of January 2026. In addition, with further construction product EPD using ISO 21930 and unregistered but verified EPD provided via pre-verified EPD tools, I believe there are currently more than 200,000 construction product EPD available globally.

If you’d like to find out more about why the numbers are rising, check out the recorded interview on this issue with Christian Donath of ECO Platform.

Looking at the EPD programmes producing EPD to EN 15804, we are seeing growing number of EPD from programmes outside Europe, for example in North America, Australia, China and Japan. The International EPD programme has regional hubs in Australasia, Turkey, India, Asia and North, South and Central America accounting for over 30% of their 16970 construction product EPD.

In the US, the number of concrete EPD continues to increase, nearing 90,000, and accounting for the vast majority of EPD to ISO 21930. These EPD are produced by pre-verified EPD tools, allowing EPD to be produced for multiple mixes at each of a concrete producer’s sites. The search functionality within EC3 allows users to search for concrete EPD by location, techical performance characteristics and by GWP impact.

Hi Jane! Interesting data. I think we crossed paths when you were at thinkstep many years ago! I work in food sector and am envious of construction sectors update of EPDs! From what I understand EPDs in construction are driven by regs and public procurement (?)… wondering if there’s any technical reason why food sector couldn’t scale more EPDs? i.e. are the standards/PCRs in place do you know? Is it “just” a lack of demand/investment by food businesses? Thanks! R

    • I’m afraid I’ve not any expertise of the food sector. I know the Ecodesign and Sustainable Products Regulation will potentially cover food packaging, but I am not aware of any other requirements to assess the embodied impacts of foods.
